New Grant and Songwriting Award for Social Justice

Following the untimely death of singer/songwriter and social justice advocate, Alistair Hulett, on 28 January 2010, two memorial funds were established in his name; one in the UK and one in Australia. Both funds were established with the aim of honouring and upholding Alistair’s legacy of actively campaigning through his music and his songwriting on behalf of the poor, the oppressed and the disadvantaged.
We are proud to announce the annual Alistair Hulett 'Songs for Social Justice' Award which is a songwriting competition organised by the Alistair Hulett Memorial Fund (Australia) and supported by the National Folk Festival (NFF). The Fund has also initiated a 'First CD Grant' Program to assist musicians whose work has a social justice focus in producing and recording their first CD.
The deadline for entries in the Songwriting Award is 5 March 2012.The winning entry will be selected by a panel of judges including Eric Bogle, Kate Fagan and Judy Small and will be announced and performed at either the opening or closing concert of the National Folk Festival (5-9 April, 2012). A prize of $1000 will be awarded to the winner for use in broadcasting/recording the song. The competition is open to musicians of all ages, experience, musical genres and cultural origin.

The music may, for example, promote equality, justice and diversity; it may include multi-cultural music, focus on indigenous people, asylum seekers and refugees, disabled people and the homeless or help promote other egalitarian values consistent with the legacy of Alistair Hulett.
